Whetstone Wanderers

Adam was a finchley boy born and bred. He went to summer side primary and ashmole secondary school. After leaving school Adam concentrated on his football whilst enrolling on a plumbing apprenticeship. He played for a number of teams and was breaking into the team at Barnet fc. Unfortunately injuries hindered Adams progress but his love for the game married with his interest in teaching a developing talents saw the birth of Adam Clifft soccer coaching school when Adam was only 18. It is fair to say that a huge % of people now aged between 4 years old and 30 years old either went to Adams school or knew those who did. The school accepted children of any level and sorted the classes by ability not age. This formula allowed children of all abilities a platform to improve, with some amazing results. Adam had a special way with the kids he taught and was often seen as more of an uncle figure than I coach. I can recall several occasions where Adam would be asked by the parents to talk to their kids about things off the pitch (homework, attitude at school etc), this itself goes to show not only how highly the parents thought of him but also how much the kids respected him. With the refurbishment of woodhouse college gym (the schools home of 20 years) Adam sought new challenges. It was at this time his relationship with whetstone began. Adam became instrumental in helping make Whetstone Wanderers the envy of lots of other youth Football clubs in Middx and Hertfordshire. He supported putting together many of the great sides that Whetstone Wanderers have had in the last 10 years. You will see the name Whetstone Wanderers on many of the Watford Friendly League trophies that are in circulation today across the league. In all cases where Whetstone have won, these teams would include boys who went to Clifft Soccer School. It was fitting that Adam’s own team Whetstone Wanderers Tigers won the League cup in his final season 2006 before having a break from football. Adam also ran football tours for the club taking up to 10 teams away during the Easter break. Throughout the first decade of the Century there was only one place to take your kids if they wanted to play Football. Adam gave them all a platform to develop and move on to play youth football in the local area. We have some great memories of Adam and he will always be remembered as one of the Stalwarts of Youth Football in the Borough of Barnet.
